UNITED NATIONS – Amritsar-born Indian Foreign Service officer Anmol Sher Singh Bedi on Tuesday has put the spotlight on reform of multilateral institutions as he represents India at the UN in Geneva.

Bedi, Senior Adviser (Disarmament) at India’s Geneva mission had topped his diplomatic training batch and received the External Affairs Minister’s Gold Medal before moving into multilateral security work.

He delivered India’s remarks at the First Committee of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which deals with disarmament and international security, during a debate on working methods, according to a report published.

Bedi said in a social media post that restoring confidence in the multilateral system should begin with reform of the UN Security Council.

“Trust is the core currency of the multilateral system,” Bedi said, adding that restoring that trust “must begin where reform is most needed: the UN Security Council.”

The remarks add a current diplomatic dimension to the career of the Punjab-born officer, who first came into the national spotlight a decade ago because of his performance in the Union Public Service Commission examination.

Bedi secured All India Rank 2 in the 2016 Civil Services Examination, becoming the highest-ranked male candidate that year.

Nandini K.R. topped the examination. The government’s official results show that Bedi graduated with a degree in Computer Science from BITS Pilani.

Bedi, who was born and brought up in Amritsar, had indicated after his UPSC success that he wanted to join the Indian Foreign Service rather than the Indian Administrative Service.

He began his diplomatic career with the Ministry of External Affairs and served as an Under Secretary in South Block in New Delhi.

His performance during diplomatic training also earned him recognition. In 2018.

Bedi was named the best officer trainee and received a gold medal from then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Bedi is listed by the Government of India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva as Senior Adviser (Disarmament) at the Permanent Mission of India to the Conference on Disarmament.

The official mission page, last updated in August 2026, lists him in that position.

His work has included representing India in multilateral discussions on nuclear disarmament, arms control and international security.

The official mission records show Bedi delivering India’s statement during a Conference on Disarmament thematic debate on nuclear disarmament in Geneva.

He underlined the role of younger generations in global security discussions, stated “Young people are agents for social change, economic development and technological innovation.”

Bedi’s latest UN intervention brings his career full circle from an engineering student in Amritsar and a UPSC Rank-2 achiever to an Indian diplomat engaged in negotiations and debates on some of the key questions of international security and multilateral reform.
