Lucknow, 9th Oct: All 10 candidates in the Rajya Sabha biennial elections from Uttar Pradesh were declared elected unopposed on Friday, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning eight seats and the Samajwadi Party (SP) securing two, according to the returning officer.

Ajit Verma, Returning Officer for the Rajya Sabha polls and Special Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, confirmed that all 10 candidates had been declared elected without a contest.

Verma said that all the candidates, except Samajwadi Party candidate Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani, had collected their election certificates.

Representatives of SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav and BJP candidate Radhakant Ojha collected the certificates on their behalf, he added.

The unopposed outcome means the BJP will fill eight of the 10 Uttar Pradesh seats being contested in this round, while the SP will occupy the remaining two.

The biennial elections were necessitated by the completion of the terms of 10 Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh on November 25.

The Rajya Sabha, Parliament’s Upper House, has members elected by the elected representatives of state legislative assemblies. In this round, all 10 Uttar Pradesh candidates were declared elected without voting being required.
