Gwalior, 18th Oct: At least 15 people were killed and several others injured after an out-of-control truck rammed into devotees near Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior late Saturday night, damaging the temple’s gate and outer wall.
The accident occurred around 1:30 am when a truck loaded with paddy, travelling from the Chhinor side, reportedly lost control while descending a steep slope where heavy vehicles are restricted. The truck broke through police barricades before running over pilgrims gathered along the road and crashing into the temple complex’s outer wall.
Gwalior Senior Superintendent of Police Dharmveer Singh said two police personnel deployed at the spot were also injured and were receiving treatment.
Officials said dozens of people were taken to hospital following the crash. Several victims sustained serious injuries, including fractures, while others suffered minor injuries. Medical teams were conducting CT scans and X-rays to assess the condition of the injured and guide their treatment.
Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chauhan said ambulances and other emergency vehicles were rushed to the site after authorities received information about the accident. She confirmed that an investigation had been initiated into how the truck entered the restricted stretch despite barricades and a police checkpoint set up during Navratri.
A team from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) was also sent to inspect the truck mechanically and determine whether a technical fault contributed to the crash.
An eyewitness, whose brother was injured, alleged that the truck was overloaded and suddenly lost control, running over people and nearby shops. He said several people died at the scene and chaos continued in the area after the accident.
The death toll and number of injured reported by officials varied during the initial response. Further details are awaited as the investigation and rescue efforts continue.
