Srinagar, 24th Oct: A political controversy has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir after the BJP criticised National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah over his remarks on Kashmiris and Pakistan, accusing him of echoing Islamabad’s narrative.
Abdullah had alleged that the Indian government’s intentions towards Kashmiris were not right and said Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts had helped bring their concerns to global attention. His comments drew sharp reactions from BJP leaders, who challenged his assessment of the situation in the Union Territory.
BJP national spokesperson RP Singh urged Abdullah to look at the condition of Kashmiris across the border. He argued that the abrogation of Article 370 and Jammu and Kashmir’s full integration with India had contributed to economic progress and increased tourism.
Singh also pointed to the region’s reported annual tourist arrivals as evidence of its development.
BJP Leaders Demand Apology
BJP national council member Yamini Sharma accused Abdullah of making remarks that, she said, insulted the Indian Constitution and the people of Jammu and Kashmir. She referred to the loss of lives caused by cross-border terrorism and alleged that the National Conference was echoing Pakistan’s position.
BJP MLA Yudhvir Sethi also condemned Abdullah’s comments, describing them as pro-Pakistan. He called for legal action against those making statements he considered anti-national and demanded an apology from the NC chief.
The BJP leaders’ remarks have intensified the political exchange over Kashmir’s governance, security and relations with Pakistan.
Political Debate Over Kashmir Continues
The controversy highlights continuing differences between the BJP and the National Conference over the political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the legacy of Article 370 and Pakistan’s role in the region.
While BJP leaders have defended the government’s policies and accused Abdullah of undermining national interests, the reported comments have renewed debate over how Kashmiris’ concerns are represented in domestic and international discussions.
