Patna, 24th Oct: The Janata Dal (United) on Saturday expelled Mokama MLA Anant Singh and former legislator Neelam Devi for six years over alleged anti-party activities, escalating tensions within the Bihar-based political party.
In a statement issued by Bihar unit president Umesh Singh Kushwaha, the party said Anant Singh’s primary membership had been terminated with immediate effect for allegedly defying party directives, using insulting language against its top leadership and campaigning for a rival candidate in the recent legislative council elections.
The party also recommended to the Bihar Assembly Speaker that Singh’s membership as an MLA be terminated under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.
Anant Singh Backed Rival Candidate
Anant Singh, a former legislator known for his controversial political background, had openly challenged the JD(U) by campaigning for Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh in the Bihar Legislative Council elections.
He had vowed to defeat JD(U) MLC Neeraj Kumar by supporting and canvassing for Anuj Singh, an action the party described as a violation of its directives.
The JD(U)’s decision to expel Singh for six years follows the dispute over his support for the rival candidate.
Neelam Devi Also Expelled
The party also terminated the primary membership of former legislator Neelam Devi with immediate effect over her alleged involvement in anti-party activities.
The JD(U) did not provide further details about the specific allegations against her in the statement.
The party’s recommendation to the Assembly Speaker regarding Anant Singh’s disqualification will be considered through the applicable constitutional process.
