Kucknow, 28th Oct: The Samajwadi Party (SP), led by Akhilesh Yadav, has scored a notable victory in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, retaining the Varanasi Teachers’ Legislative Council seat and moving towards a decisive win in the Graduates’ constituency. The party also won the Agra Teachers’ seat, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained an overall advantage in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections.
The elections were held for 11 seats and are being closely watched ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. The BJP won five seats and was leading in another, while the SP’s gains in Varanasi and Agra gave it fresh political momentum.
SP Retains Varanasi Teachers’ Seat
In the Varanasi Teachers’ constituency, SP candidate Lal Bihari Yadav defeated BJP nominee Pramod Kumar Mishra by 4,898 votes. Yadav credited party chief Akhilesh Yadav for the victory, saying the party’s approach had helped it compete strongly across constituencies.
He also dismissed suggestions that the contentious University Grants Commission (UGC) Bill had influenced the result, saying job security and teachers’ concerns were more important factors.
In the Varanasi Graduates’ constituency, SP candidate Ashutosh Sinha was set for a decisive victory over BJP candidate Kedar Nath Singh, according to the reported trends.
The SP also secured the Agra Teachers’ constituency, while the BJP won the Lucknow Teachers’, Meerut-Saharanpur Teachers’, Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’ and Meerut-Saharanpur Graduates’ constituencies, along with another seat.
What Does the Varanasi Result Mean?
The Varanasi results have drawn attention because the city is represented in the Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. SP leaders have described the outcome as an encouraging sign ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, although Legislative Council results alone do not establish how voters will behave in a state-wide Assembly contest.
Akhilesh Yadav criticised the BJP over its handling of teachers’ concerns, claiming that the community had faced humiliation and urging teachers to support the party in the next Assembly elections.
For the SP, the result offers a morale boost and an opportunity to highlight local concerns. For the BJP, the losses in Varanasi and Agra contrast with its broader performance across other parts of the state.
Teachers’ and Graduates’ Constituencies Explained
Teachers’ and Graduates’ constituencies are part of the electoral system for Legislative Councils in states with bicameral legislatures, which have both a Legislative Assembly and a Legislative Council.
These seats are elected by specific groups of voters, including eligible teachers and graduates, rather than through a general electorate. The system provides these groups with a distinct channel of representation in the state legislature.
