New Delhi, 28th Oct: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday named Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha bypoll in Madhya Pradesh. The election has been necessitated by the resignation of former Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan earlier this month.
The bypoll is scheduled for November 12. Puri, 74, is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh, where his term is due to end on November 25. Murugan had around four years remaining in his six-year term when he vacated the Madhya Pradesh seat.
With the BJP holding a comfortable majority in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Puri is expected to have a clear path to election.
Continuity for the Petroleum Ministry
Puri has headed the Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry since July 2021, overseeing the country’s energy sector through significant geopolitical disruptions, including the Russia-Ukraine war and conflicts in West Asia.
His nomination comes as India’s oil and gas sector continues to navigate uncertainty around shipping routes and energy supplies. His continuation in the ministry would provide administrative continuity as the country pursues deeper exploration and development of domestic hydrocarbon resources.
The upstream sector is preparing to expand deepwater exploration, supported by financial assistance of ₹84,084 crore, according to the information provided.
Political Speculation Over Ministerial Role
Puri’s return to the Rajya Sabha also addresses months of speculation about his future in the Union Cabinet. His nomination is being viewed as a possible signal of continued confidence in his role, although the bypoll itself will determine his return to the Upper House.
The minister has also faced opposition criticism over his name appearing in batches of documents commonly referred to as the Epstein files, released by the United States Department of Justice. The issue has been raised repeatedly by opposition leaders.
Puri Thanks PM Modi and BJP Leadership
Reacting to his nomination on X, Puri expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s senior leadership. He said the opportunity was not merely a responsibility but also a chance to strengthen his commitment to the organisation and public service.
The November 12 bypoll will fill the vacancy created by Murugan’s resignation and determine Puri’s return to the Rajya Sabha.
