Chennai, 9th May: The political suspense in Tamil Nadu deepened on Saturday after the AIADMK denied reports claiming that it had proposed making Thol Thirumavalavan the Chief Minister if a coalition was stitched together with the DMK and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).

The denial came amid intense speculation over possible post-poll alliances following the fractured electoral verdict in the state.

Reports had suggested that both the DMK and AIADMK were exploring options with the VCK and considering extending the top post to Thirumavalavan in exchange for support. However, AIADMK sources rejected the claim outright.

The VCK, which won just two seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, also dismissed reports that it was bargaining for ministerial or constitutional positions.

VCK General Secretary D Ravikumar said the reports were false and misleading.
“The reports currently being circulated, claiming that the VCK is seeking various positions and making demands, are entirely contrary to the truth,” Ravikumar said in an online statement.

He added that the party would announce its final stand later in the evening.

VCK Holds Key to Government Formation
Actor-politician Vijay-led TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats and currently has the support of 116 MLA-elects.

The party requires backing from two more legislators to cross the majority mark, placing the VCK in a crucial position with its two MLAs.

Sources said TVK is expected to clarify its stand by 4 pm. However, the announcement has reportedly been delayed as one of the VCK MLAs is travelling to Chennai. The VCK leadership is believed to be insisting on signatures from both MLAs before taking a final call.

DMK-AIADMK Talks Continue
Sources also said Vijay had approached smaller parties including AMMK and IUML for support, but both declined.

Meanwhile, the DMK and AIADMK — long-time rivals in Tamil Nadu politics — are reportedly engaged in discussions to prevent a Vijay-led government from taking shape after the strong TVK performance in the election.

Political observers described the possibility of cooperation between the two Dravidian parties as unprecedented given their decades-long rivalry.
