New Delhi, 29th April: BJP leader Pravesh Wahi was elected Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Wednesday, marking a significant political victory for the party in the national capital’s civic administration.

Wahi, councillor from Rohini East, secured 156 votes, comfortably crossing the winning threshold of 137 in the 273-member electoral college.

His victory was bolstered by support from the Indraprastha Vikas Party, while Congress candidate Hazi Zaraf managed only nine votes.

BJP councillor Monika Pant from Anand Vihar was also elected Deputy Mayor with an identical vote count, further consolidating the party’s position.

Additionally, BJP candidates Jai Bhagwan Yadav and Manish Chadha secured standing committee seats, while AAP’s Jalaj Chaudhary also entered the panel.

The Aam Aadmi Party chose to boycott the election, describing the move as a calculated strategy to hold the BJP solely accountable for civic governance outcomes.

Wahi pledged to prioritize Delhi’s cleanliness, infrastructure and development, thanking BJP leadership and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for their support.

The result ends AAP’s recent hold over the mayor’s office and signals BJP’s renewed dominance in Delhi’s unified municipal governance structure.
