Brij Bhushan Singh Acquitted in Wrestlers’ Harassment Case

New Delhi, 3rd Aug: A Delhi court on Monday acquitted former BJP MP and ex-Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and co-accused Vinod Tomar in the alleged sexual harassment case filed by women wrestlers.

The verdict was delivered by the Rouse Avenue Court, which had reserved its order on July 2 after hearing final arguments in the case lodged by six women wrestlers.

Reacting to the judgment, Singh said the court had “honourably acquitted” him, reiterating the stand he had maintained since the allegations first surfaced.

“The day the accusation was levelled against me, I had said that if the charge were proven, I would willingly hang myself; today, the court has acquitted me and used the term ‘honourably acquitted.’ What’s done is done,” Singh told NDTV after the verdict.

The case arose from an FIR registered by Delhi Police following protests by women wrestlers at Jantar Mantar, where allegations of sexual harassment during Singh’s tenure as WFI chief were raised.

Delhi Police filed a 1,500-page chargesheet in June 2023 after completing its investigation into the allegations made by Indian and foreign women wrestlers.

In May 2024, a Delhi court had ordered the framing of a charge of criminal intimidation against Singh while discharging him in a complaint filed by one of the six women wrestlers.

Following Monday’s verdict, supporters gathered outside Singh’s Delhi residence, bursting crackers, showering flower petals and raising slogans in his support.

WFI President Sanjay Singh welcomed the judgment, saying supporters were “in a great mood and really happy.”

The allegations against Brij Bhushan Singh had triggered a nationwide political controversy and sustained protests by leading wrestlers.

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP did not field Singh from the Kaiserganj constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Instead, the party nominated his son Karan Bhushan Singh, who went on to win the seat.
