Gauhati University Launches Northeast’s First Quantum Technology Minor
New undergraduate minor in Quantum Technology will be offered to B.Tech and B.E. students from the 2026-27 academic session

Guwahati, 2nd Aug: Gauhati University has approved the introduction of a Minor Degree Course in Quantum Technology for B.Tech and B.E. students from the 2026-27 academic session, marking what has been reported as the first undergraduate minor programme of its kind in Northeast India.
The programme will be offered through the Department of Physics at Gauhati University and is aimed at providing undergraduate engineering students exposure to the rapidly developing field of quantum technologies.
Following the recommendation made at the joint meeting of the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Technology on July 24, 2026, the university has decided to introduce a Minor Degree Course in Quantum Technology. This decision received approval from the Vice-Chancellor, subject to reporting to the Academic Council.
The university has also approved the draft regulations and syllabus for this new programme. The curriculum was recommended earlier by the Committee for Courses and Syllabus (CCS) in Physics at its meeting on June 29. The new academic programme will be implemented from the 2026-27 academic session.
Dr. Kalpna Bora, Head of the Department of Physics, has been appointed as the Programme Coordinator for this course.
The move comes as quantum computing and related technologies gain increasing strategic importance in India. The Centre and educational institutions have been stepping up efforts to develop expertise in frontier technologies, including quantum computing, quantum communication and associated research.
The Northeast has also witnessed initiatives aimed at expanding access to quantum technology education. In January this year, Assam Don Bosco University in Guwahati hosted a workshop on quantum computing involving experts from C-DAC and IIT Guwahati, covering areas including quantum computing fundamentals, quantum machine learning and quantum error correction.
Gauhati University’s new minor programme represents a further step towards bringing specialised quantum technology education into the undergraduate engineering curriculum in the region.
The university formally listed the notification for the introduction of the Minor Degree Course in Quantum Technology for B.Tech/B.E. programmes on July 27.
