New Delhi, 25th April: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued a comprehensive heatwave advisory as temperatures across several parts of the country continue to rise sharply, with conditions expected to intensify in the coming days.
According to IMD, maximum temperatures in many regions of northwest, central and peninsular India are currently ranging between 40°C and 44°C, with the highest recorded at 44.5°C in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Several areas are witnessing temperatures significantly above normal, indicating growing heat stress.
The department has warned of likely heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of northern states including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, as well as parts of central India.
Coastal and eastern regions are expected to experience hot and humid conditions, while warm nights in northern plains could further increase discomfort and health risks.
The IMD forecast indicates that temperatures in northwest India may remain stable for the next few days before a gradual decline, while central and other regions may see a continued rise followed by a slight drop.
In its advisory, IMD has urged citizens to take precautionary measures such as avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, staying hydrated, wearing light clothing and limiting strenuous outdoor activity. Special caution has been advised for children, the elderly and those with health conditions.
The department stressed that early awareness and preventive action are key to reducing heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The extended outlook suggests that heatwave conditions could persist over the next week across large parts of the country, particularly in northern and central regions, while hot and humid weather is expected in coastal states.
The IMD has also projected above-normal heatwave days during the April–June period, underlining the need for continued preparedness.
Citizens have been advised to follow official updates and adhere to safety guidelines to minimise health risks during the ongoing heatwave.
