Indian-Origin Woman Shalini Thakur Killed by Stalker in California

WASHINGTON – According to local authorities said on Sunday that an Indian origin woman Shalini Thakur had obtained a restraining order in May after alleged harassment that included a tracking device hidden under her car and unauthorized access to her home.

The authorities said that months of alleged stalking that included an Apple AirTag hidden under a car, deflated tyres and a copied apartment key ended with the fatal shooting of 38-year-old Indian-origin woman Shalini Thakur in California.

Thakur was killed at a shopping centre in Sacramento on September 8, local media reported.

Authorities identified the accused as Rohit Rohit, 22, an Indian national who allegedly continued stalking her even after she obtained a restraining order in May.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security Rohit approached Thakur near her car. She tried to get away, but he allegedly chased her and opened fire several times.

DHS said Rohit shot Thakur in the head at close range after she fell to the ground. He then fled in his vehicle.

Authorities later found Rohit dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The killing came after months of alleged harassment.

DHS, cited local reports, said Thakur found an Apple AirTag under the hood of her car in January 2026. Rohit later allegedly deflated her vehicle tyres and followed her to work, where he pretended to offer assistance.

He was also accused of obtaining a copy of Thakur’s apartment key and entered her home while she was asleep.

Thakur secured a restraining order against him in May. According to DHS, the alleged stalking continued as recently as July.

DHS said Rohit had entered the US through Arizona in August 2023 and was apprehended by the US Border Patrol.

The department said he was released into the country under the Biden administration.

DHS described him as an undocumented immigrant from India.
