SACRAMENTO, 23rd Oct: A 28-year-old Indian-origin man, Gurinder Gill, has been arrested on a murder charge after his wife, Jasmine Gill, was found dead in California, days after he claimed she had been taken by US immigration agents.

Jasmine, 30, was last seen at her Sacramento residence on September 30. Her cousin reported her missing four days later. During the initial investigation, Gurinder allegedly told detectives that agents from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had taken her into custody while she was checking the mail outside their home.

However, detectives contacted ICE, which confirmed that no enforcement activity had taken place at the residence. As the investigation progressed, police said they found inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements. Investigators also learned that the couple were involved in an ongoing divorce and child custody dispute.

On October 1, burned human remains were discovered in El Dorado County and were later identified as Jasmine’s. Based on the investigation, detectives obtained a murder arrest warrant for Gurinder, who was arrested on October 14. He is being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail without bail eligibility, according to the report.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office officials said the investigation had revealed discrepancies in the husband’s account of his wife’s disappearance. The case remains under investigation.

ICE also commented on the case, accusing Gurinder of attempting to shift blame onto its officers.

Family Seeks to Bring Jasmine’s Body Home
Jasmine’s family described her as a devoted daughter, a loving sister, a caring nurse and the mother of an eight-month-old boy. A fundraising page has been set up to help bring her body back to India.

The family said Jasmine had been seeking a divorce and hoped to build a safer future for herself and her child. Her mother, Sukhwinder Kaur, who also worked as a nurse in India, raised Jasmine and her brother after losing her husband at a young age.

In a video message, Kaur said her daughter had faced cruelty and appealed for her body to be sent back to India.

The family is now seeking support to complete the arrangements and bring Jasmine home for her final rites.
