Srinagar, 5th Oct: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday ordered the prorogation of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, bringing the proceedings of the House’s Autumn Session to a formal close.
According to a bulletin issued by Assembly Secretary M K Pandita, Sinha exercised the powers vested in him under Clause (a) of Sub-section (2) of Section 18 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, to prorogue the Assembly.
The Assembly had convened for a 10-day Autumn Session from September 21 to September 30. During the session, the House passed a resolution calling upon the Centre to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
The Assembly is now likely to convene for its Budget Session in Jammu next year.
Prorogation is a constitutional procedure that temporarily ends the proceedings of a legislative session without dissolving the legislature. The Assembly continues to exist and can meet again when summoned for a subsequent session.
