New Delhi, 14th Sept: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Monday extended greetings to citizens on Hindi Diwas 2026, saying India’s linguistic diversity is a strength that reinforces the country’s spirit of “Unity in Diversity.”
In his message, Shah said language is not merely a means of communication but also carries the history, traditions, worldview and cultural identity of a society. He said Hindi has played an important role as a language of dialogue, communication and coordination among people from different parts of the country.
Shah emphasised that the development of Hindi should go hand in hand with the preservation and promotion of all Indian languages. He cited the contributions of personalities including Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, whose mother tongues were not Hindi but who contributed to the language’s role in national communication.
He recalled that the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi as the Official Language of the Union on September 14, 1949. He also linked the promotion of Indian languages with the government’s efforts to reduce colonial influences and strengthen national self-confidence.
Highlighting developments in education, Shah said the National Education Policy places the mother tongue at the centre of education, while engineering and medical education and competitive examinations are increasingly available in Indian languages.
He also highlighted technological initiatives supporting Indian languages, including the ‘Bharati’ AI-based tool, the ‘Hindi Shabd Sindhu’ digital dictionary with more than 8.27 lakh entries, and the Indian Language Section established in 2024.
Shah said artificial intelligence and translation technologies are helping reduce language barriers, enabling people to communicate more widely while retaining their linguistic identity.
Addressing young people, the Home Minister urged them to learn as many global languages as possible but not abandon their mother tongue. He also appealed to parents to communicate with their children in their mother tongue.
Referring to the 150th anniversary of the composition of ‘Vande Mataram’, Shah said Hindi and all Indian languages should become powerful instruments in building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
