Om Birla Leads Parliament’s Tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee

Lok Sabha Speaker, Union Ministers and MPs Pay Floral Tributes on 125th Birth Anniversary

New Delhi, 6th July: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday led Members of Parliament in paying floral tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary at a function held in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan.

Among those who paid tributes were Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State L. Murugan, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries.

Dr. Mookerjee, born on July 6, 1901, is remembered as an eminent parliamentarian, educationist and statesman who made significant contributions to education, public life and national integration. He served as the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, was a member of the First Lok Sabha and was widely recognised for his commitment to democratic values and national unity.

The portrait of Dr. Mookerjee displayed in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan was painted by N. S. Subbakrishna and unveiled in 1991 by former President R. Venkataraman.
