New Delhi, 10th July: Indian Railways has approved a ₹175 crore project to create additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Shed in Raipur under the South East Central Railway (SECR).
The project has been sanctioned as part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to strengthen locomotive maintenance infrastructure in line with the rapid expansion of its electric locomotive fleet and the growing demand from freight and passenger operations across the network.
According to the Ministry of Railways, homing refers to the allocation of a locomotive to a designated maintenance shed, which serves as its primary base for scheduled maintenance, safety inspections, repairs and overall upkeep to ensure safe and efficient operations.
The additional homing facilities at the Raipur depot will enhance maintenance capacity while enabling better utilisation of existing infrastructure. The project is also expected to create adequate space for future technological expansion and modernisation of the facility.
The ministry said the infrastructure augmentation will support the increasing induction of electric locomotives into the Indian Railways network and improve operational efficiency by strengthening maintenance capabilities.
