Indore, 3rd Nov: RSS Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale has paid tribute to Rajnarayan Basu on his 200th birth anniversary, describing him as a pioneer of national consciousness whose ideas helped shape India’s cultural awakening and freedom movement.

In a statement issued on Tuesday during the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s Akhil Bharatiya Karyakari Mandal meeting in Indore, Hosabale highlighted Basu’s contributions to social reform, education, Swadeshi advocacy and the promotion of national self-respect.

A reformer committed to social change
Born on December 7, 1826, in Boral village of Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, Rajnarayan Basu devoted much of his life to education and social reform.

According to Hosabale, Basu worked for the upliftment of disadvantaged sections, opposed intoxicant use, promoted women’s education and supported widow remarriage. He also set an example by arranging the marriage of his brother to a widow.

Basu believed that national progress required self-confidence, cultural awareness and a strong sense of self-respect among educated Indians.

Role in promoting Swadeshi and national consciousness
Hosabale recalled Basu’s efforts to create a platform for national awakening through his draft, Prospectus of a Society for Promotion of National Feeling.

His sustained efforts contributed to the growth of the Hindu Mela, initiated by Nabagopal Mitra in 1867. The platform encouraged the use of indigenous goods and promoted the spirit of Swadeshi.

Basu also emphasised the importance of mother-tongue education, regarding language and cultural roots as essential elements of national self-respect.

In 1873, he authored The Superiority of Hinduism, discussing the philosophical foundations and distinctive features of Hindu culture. His vision of cultural and national awakening was further outlined in the pamphlet Vridhaa Hindur Aasha (The Old Hindu’s Hope), published in the 1880s.

Influence on Sri Aurobindo and other leaders
Rajnarayan Basu was the maternal grandfather of Sri Aurobindo, and his nationalist ideas had a profound influence on the young Aurobindo.

Hosabale also recalled that prominent personalities, including Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda and Sister Nivedita, held Basu in high regard and drew inspiration from his life and ideas.

Concluding his tribute, Hosabale said Basu’s philosophy continued to hold relevance, particularly his emphasis on self-respect, cultural heritage and national unity.

He said the nation would remain grateful for the contributions of the social reformer and nationalist thinker.

Date note: Basu was born on December 7, 1826. His 200th birth anniversary falls on December 7, 2026; the RSS issued Hosabale’s statement on November 3 as part of the bicentenary-year observance.
