New Delhi, 19th July: Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who remains hospitalised after being removed from Delhi’s Jantar Mantar during a prolonged hunger strike, has urged supporters to make Monday’s march to Parliament a “big success” as the Monsoon Session begins.
In a handwritten note shared from Safdarjung Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, Wangchuk described his stay as an “illegal detention” and appealed to protesters to continue the movement despite his absence.
“March to the Parliament. Please make it a big success,” Wangchuk wrote, signing the message as being sent through his wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, from his “illegal detention” at the hospital.
The activist, who has been on a hunger strike for more than three weeks, has linked the ongoing protest to the alleged NEET paper leak, calling it part of “India’s second freedom movement” aimed at securing justice for students and ensuring transparency in the education system.
Wangchuk joined the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar on June 28, demanding accountability over the alleged examination irregularities and seeking action against those responsible.
On July 18, the 21st day of his hunger strike, Delhi Police shifted him to Safdarjung Hospital after concerns were raised about his deteriorating health. The move came after the Delhi High Court directed authorities to take all necessary steps to protect his life.
With Wangchuk unable to participate physically, his wife Gitanjali Angmo has announced that she will lead the march to Parliament on Monday.
Meanwhile, Angmo has approached the Delhi High Court seeking permission to transfer Wangchuk from the government-run Safdarjung Hospital to a private medical facility, alleging a lack of transparency in his treatment.
The planned march is expected to coincide with the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, where the Opposition is also likely to raise issues related to Wangchuk’s detention and the alleged NEET paper leak.
