New Delhi, 18th April: Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov held high-level meetings with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Friday, focusing on prospects for achieving lasting peace in the ongoing conflict.
Umerov, a close aide of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, is currently on an official visit to India.
During the meetings, the Indian side reiterated its consistent position that the Russia-Ukraine conflict should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
“Discussed our bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on the Ukraine conflict,” Jaishankar said after the meeting.
Umerov provided a detailed update on the frontline situation and ongoing negotiations, highlighting Ukraine’s push for a “just, lasting and sustainable peace.”
He also expressed appreciation for the discussions, noting that both sides shared a common understanding on the need for peaceful solutions.
The talks also covered bilateral cooperation and implementation of agreements reached during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kyiv in August 2024.
India and Ukraine reviewed progress on these commitments while exploring avenues to deepen ties.
In his meeting with NSA Ajit Doval, Umerov discussed the evolving security situation and broader strategic issues.
The Ministry of External Affairs said India reaffirmed its “principled position” of supporting a peaceful settlement based on dialogue.
The meetings underline India’s diplomatic engagement with both sides of the conflict, maintaining its stance of neutrality while advocating peaceful resolution.
Umerov said he looks forward to strengthening cooperation with India as efforts continue to find a durable solution to the conflict.
