New Delhi, 18th April: A sudden spell of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds brought temporary relief from heat in the national capital on Friday, even as authorities warned of travel disruptions and a sharp rise in temperatures in the coming days.

Airlines issued advisories asking passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport and to factor in additional travel time due to slower road conditions caused by rain.

Rain, Storms Bring Brief Relief
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi witnessed a cloudy sky with light rain, thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph across the NCR.

Heat Set to Return
The IMD forecast indicates that the brief spell of rain will be followed by dry and hot conditions. From April 18 onwards, skies are expected to clear, with temperatures rising significantly.

Maximum temperatures are likely to range between 39°C and 42°C, while minimum temperatures may remain between 20°C and 24°C — levels described as “above normal” for this time of year.

Health Advisory Issued
While no official heatwave has been declared, the IMD has flagged moderate health risks for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

Residents have been advised to avoid direct sunlight, wear light cotton clothing, stay hydrated and use protective gear like hats or umbrellas.

Expert Insight
IMD scientist Dr Shashi Kant said temperatures in Delhi have already been recorded between 39°C and 42°C in the last 24 hours, with a peak of 41.4°C, which is 2–4 degrees above normal.

He added that while parts of northwest India may see temporary relief, central India is likely to continue experiencing heatwave conditions for the next few days.
