Union Minister Scindia Meets Mirabai Chanu After CWG Gold

Minister pushes for world-class sports ecosystem in Northeast to nurture more champions

New Delhi, 3rd Aug: Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia met ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu in New Delhi on Monday following her historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow.

Congratulating Chanu on her achievement, Scindia praised her determination, discipline and perseverance, describing her journey as an inspiration for millions of young athletes, particularly those from the North Eastern Region.

During the meeting, Chanu shared her journey and the challenges she overcame to emerge as one of India’s leading sportspersons. Scindia also discussed various aspects of high-performance sports with her, including training routines, nutrition, recovery cycles and the importance of adequate rest and sleep.

The Union Minister acknowledged the contribution of Chanu’s coach, trainer and physiotherapist, stressing that sporting excellence requires a strong support system combining scientific training and expert guidance.

Scindia said the North Eastern Region should produce many more champions like Mirabai Chanu through access to world-class training and athlete support.

He highlighted the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region’s efforts to build a comprehensive sports ecosystem through a High Level Task Force (HLTF).

Under the ‘One State, One Sport’ initiative, each Northeastern state is being supported to develop sporting disciplines where it possesses a natural competitive advantage, including weightlifting, archery and football.

Scindia stressed that the initiative would go beyond physical infrastructure and focus on quality coaching, sports science, nutrition, recovery, scientific training and comprehensive athlete support.

Chanu’s trainer Vijay Sharma also highlighted the sporting potential of athletes from the Northeast and said such initiatives could help identify and nurture talent at the grassroots level.

The meeting reaffirmed the government’s focus on strengthening the Northeast’s sporting ecosystem through investment in talent development, coaching and high-performance support in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the region.
