New Delhi, 11th June: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday called upon aspiring journalists to uphold truth, objectivity and public interest, saying India needs media professionals who are intellectually honest, socially sensitive, technologically competent and deeply committed to democratic values.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the month-long internship programme conducted by Sansad TV for final-year postgraduate students of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) at the Vice-President’s House, Radhakrishnan highlighted the critical role of media in a democracy.

“Media has the power not only to shape narratives but also to shape nations,” he said, urging students to contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047 through responsible and objective journalism.

The Vice-President recalled his visit to the IIMC convocation earlier this year, where he had suggested providing practical training opportunities to students through Sansad TV. He expressed satisfaction that the proposal was implemented promptly and appreciated the professionals of Sansad TV for mentoring the interns.

Emphasising India’s growing global stature, Radhakrishnan said the country is attracting renewed international attention due to its demographic dividend, technological innovation and democratic resilience. He urged young journalists to present India’s development journey with integrity and factual accuracy.

Warning against sensationalism in an increasingly attention-driven media environment, the Vice-President said credibility must be built on truth and public interest rather than popularity or viral content.

He also highlighted the challenges posed by emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, saying AI can be a powerful tool for research and verification but editorial decisions must remain guided by human judgment and ethical considerations.

Radhakrishnan stressed the need to remain vigilant against misinformation, fake news and deepfakes, which pose growing threats to public discourse and democratic institutions.

Calling for inclusive journalism, he urged media professionals to move beyond metropolitan centres and focus on the aspirations, challenges and achievements of people across the country.

Among those present at the event were Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Rajya Sabha Secretary-General P.C. Mody, Sansad TV CEO Amit Khare, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Chanchal Kumar, IIMC Vice-Chancellor Dr Pragya Paliwal Gaur and other senior dignitaries.
