Leh, 21st June: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday participated in the International Day of Yoga celebrations in Leh and called upon citizens to make yoga an essential part of daily life for a healthier, happier and more peaceful society.

Addressing the gathering, he said yoga is not merely a physical exercise but an ancient gift of India to humanity that strengthens the body, calms the mind and elevates the soul.

The Vice-President said yoga’s global recognition reflects India’s enduring contribution to the world and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative at the United Nations in 2014 for establishing June 21 as International Day of Yoga.

Referring to the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, Radhakrishnan said that as India’s elderly population grows, yoga can help ensure that added years to life also bring better health and vitality.

He also said that people who regularly practice yoga remain away from drugs and harmful habits, as yoga promotes discipline, awareness and a balanced lifestyle.

Praising the people of Ladakh, the Vice-President described them as calm, kind and resilient, saying they naturally reflect the true spirit of yoga through their harmony with nature.

Earlier, he visited the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre in Leh and appreciated its contribution towards education, healthcare, environmental conservation, social welfare, yoga and meditation.
