Kolkata, 21st June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday led the national observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga from Red Road in Kolkata, participating in the Common Yoga Protocol session alongside thousands of yoga practitioners.
Extending greetings to people across the globe, Modi said yoga has emerged as one of humanity’s largest collective movements and serves as a powerful force that connects people across countries and cultures.
“Yoga connects us all and brings us together,” the Prime Minister said, adding that when yoga becomes a way of life, it strengthens the foundation of human unity.
Highlighting this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” Modi said yoga is not limited to any age group but is a lifelong companion that helps maintain flexibility, energy, mental peace and protection against lifestyle-related diseases.
The Prime Minister said yoga teaches the art of balanced living by guiding individuals towards discipline in food habits, activities, work and rest. He added that yoga creates a pathway from mental wellness to physical well-being.
Modi also praised Kolkata residents for their participation in the “Swachhta Se Swagat” initiative and recalled West Bengal’s rich spiritual heritage associated with Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, Maharshi Aurobindo and Lahiri Mahasaya.
Highlighting the success of the “Yoga 365” initiative, the Prime Minister said more than three million people from 130 countries participated in the 100-day online yoga programme, reflecting the growing global acceptance of yoga.
Concluding his address, Modi called upon people to make yoga a part of their everyday lives and said a healthy society forms the foundation of a stronger and more prosperous nation.
