Two Assam Congress MLAs, including a former state unit head, have extended their support to the Himanta Biswa Sarma government while retaining their membership in the grand old party.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha has stepped down from his position as the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) working president but has indicated to the PCC president that he will remain a primary member of the party.

Both Purkayastha and Basanta Das met Chief Minister Sarma on Wednesday to convey their support for his government in the Assam Assembly. “Yes, I have received an offer from the Chief Minister, and I have accepted his proposal,” Purkayastha confirmed to reporters.

While Purkayastha’s future intentions remain uncertain, it is unclear whether he plans to defect to the BJP or continue supporting the government from within the Congress party.

Purkayastha, who won as the MLA of Karimganj North constituency for the first time in 2011 by defeating BJP’s Mission Ranjan Das, has a political background that began with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress.
