Patna, 14th April: Veteran leader Nitish Kumar on Tuesday resigned as Bihar Chief Minister, marking the end of a political era after nearly two decades in office.
Kumar submitted his resignation to Syed Ata Hasnain at Lok Bhavan after dissolving his cabinet earlier in the day.
Shift to National Role
Having recently taken oath as a Rajya Sabha member, Kumar is now set to transition from state politics to a national role. Shortly after stepping down, he assured full cooperation to the incoming government.
“After today’s cabinet meeting, I met the honourable Governor and submitted my resignation. The new government will have my full cooperation and guidance,” he said in a post.
BJP Set to Take Charge
The Bharatiya Janata Party is expected to form the next government in Bihar, though the name of the new Chief Minister is yet to be announced. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place on Wednesday.
End of a Long Tenure
Kumar, one of India’s longest-serving Chief Ministers, first assumed office in 2005 and led multiple governments over the years. In his farewell message, he highlighted achievements in governance, law and order, and development across sectors, including initiatives for women and youth.
He also credited the Centre for supporting Bihar’s growth and expressed confidence that the state will continue to progress under the new leadership.
