4.2-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Uttarkashi

A 2.8-magnitude tremor was recorded in Bageshwar earlier in the day; no injuries or property damage have been reported.

Uttarkashi, 10th Oct: A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Saturday evening, with tremors felt at around 8:07 pm, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 11 kilometres, with its epicentre located at latitude 30.744° N and longitude 78.414° E, the NCS said in an update on social media.

This was the second earthquake recorded in Uttarakhand on Saturday. Earlier, at 3:40 pm, a 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck Bageshwar district at a depth of five kilometres.

No reports of injuries or damage to property had emerged following either of the two earthquakes at the time of reporting.

The latest tremors come days after a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Chamoli district on October 6 at around 10:20 pm. Tremors from that earthquake were also felt in Delhi and adjoining areas, triggering concern among residents.

Several people took to social media to describe their experience. One user on X, posting from Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave, wrote that their couch and the entire building had moved, adding that they had never experienced anything similar.
