India Welcomes New IPU President Milton Dick

Harivansh-led parliamentary delegation participates in leadership election and adoption of key resolutions at Tanzania assembly

Arusha, 10th Oct: An Indian parliamentary delegation led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh participated in the concluding proceedings of the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, on October 9, with India casting its votes in the election of the organisation’s next president.

Milton Dick, Speaker of Australia’s House of Representatives, was elected the next President of the IPU through a secret ballot, according to the announcement made at the Assembly. Harivansh and other members of the Indian delegation congratulated Dick following the declaration of the result and wished him success in his new role.

India’s three votes were cast by Harivansh, Lok Sabha MP Anurag Singh Thakur and Lok Sabha MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat. Subsequently, Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra presented Dick with a congratulatory letter from the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Assembly Adopts Key Resolutions
The Indian delegation also attended the IPU Governing Council meeting, which considered the remaining agenda items, including reports from specialised meetings and the election of the organisation’s president.

Following the Governing Council proceedings, the Assembly adopted the Arusha Communiqué and a resolution on inclusive social development, focusing on parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

The Assembly also adopted an emergency resolution calling for urgent parliamentary action to address climate-related disasters and strengthen resilience in the Himalayan region and other vulnerable areas.

India’s Participation in Global Parliamentary Dialogue
The 153rd IPU Assembly was held in Arusha from October 5 to 9, bringing together parliamentarians to discuss international cooperation and shared policy challenges.

The Assembly was formally closed by Mussa Azzan Zungu, Speaker of Tanzania’s National Assembly and President of the Assembly.

India’s delegation participated in the proceedings and contributed to discussions and outcomes addressing inclusive development, disability rights and climate resilience, reflecting the role of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing global challenges.
