“TMC Betrayed Bengal’s Women”: PM Modi

PM alleges conspiracy with Congress to block 33% reservation; targets TMC in Bankura rally

Bankura, 19th April: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress, accusing it of “betraying the sisters of Bengal” by opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.

Addressing an election rally in Bankura, Modi alleged that the All India Trinamool Congress conspired with the Congress to block the legislation that sought to provide 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.

“The women of Bengal wanted 33% reservation… but Trinamool did not want Bengal’s daughters to rise in politics,” Modi said, claiming the party feared losing its grip as more women entered public life.

He termed the bill’s defeat a “betrayal” and accused opposition parties of putting politics over women’s empowerment.

The Women’s Reservation Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha on Friday after the government fell short of the required two-thirds majority, with 298 MPs voting in favour and 230 against.

Modi said the BJP remains committed to expanding women’s participation in politics and nation-building.

“We want more daughters to contribute to a Viksit Bharat,” he said, adding that women across the country trust the BJP for empowerment and safety.

The Prime Minister also accused the Trinamool Congress of being “anti-tribal,” contrasting it with the BJP’s support for Droupadi Murmu, India’s first tribal woman President.

He alleged that the TMC had insulted the President during her visit to West Bengal, saying tribal communities would not forget the incident.

With elections approaching, the remarks signal an intensifying political contest in West Bengal, with women’s reservation and tribal outreach emerging as key campaign issues.
