New Delhi, 21st April: Independent MP Pappu Yadav has triggered a major political controversy following his remarks on women’s participation in politics, drawing sharp reactions from multiple quarters.
Speaking on the Women’s Reservation Bill, Yadav alleged that many women face exploitation in political spaces, claiming that “90% of women cannot enter politics without being subjected to such situations,” while also describing male politicians as “vultures.”
The comments drew immediate criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party, with party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla calling the statement “derogatory, misogynistic and vile.”
BJP leader Charu Pragya also condemned the remarks, questioning how such views could be expressed by a public representative and demanding action.
The Bihar State Women’s Commission has issued a notice to Yadav, seeking an explanation over his comments.
Following the backlash, Yadav said his statement had been “distorted” and claimed he was attempting to highlight the challenges and exploitation faced by women entering politics.
He further alleged that authorities had failed to act in several cases of crimes against women but were quick to respond to his remarks.
The controversy comes amid ongoing debate over the Women’s Reservation Bill, which recently failed to pass in the Lok Sabha after opposition parties objected to its linkage with delimitation.
The remarks have intensified political tensions, with parties trading charges over women’s representation and safety in public life.
