New Delhi, 23rd April: A 19-year-old former domestic help has been arrested for the alleged rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman, daughter of a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, at the family’s residence in south-east Delhi.
The accused, identified as Rahul Meena, was apprehended from a hotel in Dwarka hours after the incident, police said.
According to investigators, Meena had earlier worked at the house for about eight months before being dismissed over complaints related to borrowing money. Police said he returned to Delhi and entered the residence in the Kailash Hills area on Wednesday morning, allegedly using his familiarity with the household.
The victim, a civil services aspirant, was found inside the house under suspicious circumstances, following which police were alerted.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the accused sexually assaulted the woman and later strangled her. Police said CCTV footage shows the accused changing clothes after the incident before leaving the premises. He is also suspected to have stolen around ₹2 to ₹2.5 lakh from the house.
Joint Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said the accused was aware of the family’s routine and the layout of the residence, including access points.
Investigators have also found that the accused had a pattern of borrowing money from people in the area and was allegedly addicted to online gaming.
Police said a separate case has been registered against the accused in Alwar, Rajasthan, in connection with another alleged sexual assault before he travelled to Delhi. Officials said the accused reached the city early Wednesday and entered the residential colony around 6:30 am.
He is currently in custody and has been charged with rape, murder and robbery. Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and motive.
