Bengaluru, 24th April: The outcome of bypolls in Bagalkot and Davangere South, scheduled to be declared on May 4, is set to carry wider political implications for the ruling Congress in Karnataka, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar at the centre of the narrative.
While the contests are limited to two constituencies, they have evolved into a test of the party’s internal cohesion. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah continues to lead the government, but much of the organisational management and crisis handling has been attributed to Shivakumar amid ongoing factional differences.
The campaign in Davangere South highlighted internal strains within the Congress, with disagreements over ticket distribution and dissent among some local and minority leaders. Disciplinary action against party figures further underscored tensions.
Amid these challenges, Shivakumar stepped in to manage the situation, maintaining that decisions were based on internal assessments and not targeted actions.
Despite his central role, questions remain over Shivakumar’s political future. Since the Congress returned to power in 2023, speculation has persisted over a possible leadership transition, with discussions around a rotational chief ministership. However, the party leadership has not made any formal announcement.
Recent visits by MLAs to New Delhi to meet party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader KC Venugopal have added to the speculation, with reports of discussions around a Cabinet reshuffle and governance concerns.
Throughout the developments, Shivakumar has maintained a restrained stance, reiterating that decisions rest with the party high command and emphasising his role as a party worker.
Political observers note that the bypoll results could influence the internal balance within the Congress. A strong performance may reinforce Shivakumar’s position as a key organisational leader, while a weak showing could intensify calls for clarity on leadership and governance within the state.
