Washington, 26th April: President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night after gunfire erupted near the venue in Washington, triggering panic among attendees and an immediate security response.
According to US Secret Service officials, an armed suspect attempted to breach security near the main screening area of the Washington Hilton, where the high-profile annual event was being held. The suspect reportedly fired at a Secret Service agent, who was protected by body armour and escaped serious injury. The alleged shooter was quickly apprehended.
Guests, including senior political leaders, journalists and celebrities, were forced to take cover as security personnel moved rapidly to secure the venue. Top officials, including members of the Cabinet, were escorted to safety.
Trump later confirmed via social media that all key officials were safe and praised law enforcement agencies for their swift action. He initially suggested the event continue but later announced that it would be postponed and rescheduled within 30 days in accordance with security protocols.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, traditionally a major annual media and political gathering, was ultimately cancelled for the evening following the incident.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the suspect’s motives and how the individual breached the event’s security perimeter. No fatalities were reported, and apart from one protected officer, no major injuries have been confirmed.
