Mumbai/New Delhi, 27th April: Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar has triggered a major political controversy following his remarks on the recent shooting incident near US President Donald Trump’s event in Washington.
Wadettiwar suggested that public anger against leaders acting against people’s interests often leads to such reactions, referencing Trump’s policies and broader global criticism.
He further drew comparisons with political sentiment in India, stating that while protests may not be visible on the streets, similar dissatisfaction exists among sections of the population.
The comments sparked immediate backlash from the BJP, which accused the Congress leader of indirectly justifying political violence and endorsing dangerous rhetoric.
BJP spokespersons strongly criticised the remarks, calling them irresponsible and inappropriate, particularly in the context of an international security incident involving a democratically elected leader.
The controversy comes after President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance were evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner following gunfire near the venue. The armed suspect was apprehended before reaching the main event area.
The incident has reignited debates globally on political discourse, public anger and the dangers of rhetoric that may be interpreted as condoning violence.
Wadettiwar’s comments are expected to remain a flashpoint in domestic political exchanges, with the BJP likely to continue targeting Congress over the issue.
