New Delhi, 30th April: The Election Commission of India has introduced a QR code-based Photo Identity Card system to significantly enhance security at vote counting centres across the country.
The system will debut during the May 4 counting process for Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry, along with multiple bypolls.
Designed to eliminate unauthorized access, the new framework establishes a three-tier security verification mechanism.
While the first two layers involve manual identity verification, final access to counting halls will only be granted after successful QR code authentication.
The system applies to all authorized personnel, including returning officers, assistant returning officers, counting staff, technical teams, candidates and election agents.
The Election Commission said this move is part of a broader modernization initiative, following over 30 electoral reforms introduced over the past year.
Dedicated media centres will also be established near counting halls to facilitate accredited journalists under existing authorization protocols.
Election officials nationwide have been directed to ensure strict implementation, including deployment of trained personnel for seamless access control.
The reform aims to reinforce transparency, operational efficiency and the integrity of the electoral counting process amid heightened scrutiny of election security.
