Kolkata, 16th May: TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee urged defeated candidates of the All India Trinamool Congress to rebuild the organisation after the party’s major electoral setback in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

At a meeting held at her Kalighat residence and attended by party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata reportedly told leaders that those wishing to leave the party were free to do so.

“Those who are leaving for other parties, let them go. I will rebuild the party afresh,” Banerjee was quoted as saying by party sources during the closed-door meeting.

She also asked party workers and leaders to reopen and restore damaged party offices across the state.

“To those who are staying, I say rebuild the damaged party offices, paint them and reopen them. If needed, I too will paint them,” she reportedly told party candidates.

The remarks came after the Trinamool Congress suffered a major defeat in the recently concluded Assembly elections and was pushed into the opposition benches.

Out of 294 Assembly seats in West Bengal, the TMC managed to win only 80 seats. The party had contested 291 constituencies while leaving three seats in the Darjeeling hills for ally Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha led by Anit Thapa.

Several senior leaders and ministers lost the elections, including Mamata Banerjee herself, who was defeated from Bhabanipur, considered her long-time political stronghold.

The meeting was convened amid reports of internal dissatisfaction and speculation over possible defections following the electoral debacle.

The party later shared photographs of the meeting on its official X handle and praised candidates for fighting the election despite what it described as “atrocities and intimidation”.

The TMC also reiterated its allegation that the people’s mandate had been “stolen”, a charge repeatedly raised by party leaders since the declaration of results.

Party insiders said Mamata used the meeting to boost morale within the organisation and send a message of unity during a difficult political phase.
