New Delhi, 19th May: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday interacted with artisans and weavers from North Eastern states at Rashtrapati Bhavan and praised their contribution in preserving India’s cultural heritage through traditional crafts and weaving.
The artisans and weavers had contributed to the invitation kits and cultural displays showcased during the Republic Day “At Home” reception hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 26 this year.
According to an official statement, the delegation included artisans and weavers from Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
Artisans from Nagaland prepared baskets using banana fibre and bamboo, weavers from Assam crafted traditional stoles, artisans from Manipur showcased black pottery work, while artisans from Sikkim created products using natural fibres.
During the interaction, the artisans shared their experiences of contributing to the Republic Day event and thanked the President for providing them a national platform to showcase their craftsmanship.
President Murmu said the North East possesses immense natural beauty and rich cultural traditions and stressed the need to support artisans and weavers so that their knowledge and craftsmanship reach wider audiences.
She commended them for preserving the country’s cultural heritage and described them as “the shining example of the living heritage of the nation”.
The President also urged them to pass on these traditional skills and practices to younger generations.
Following the interaction, the artisans and weavers were given a guided tour of Rashtrapati Bhavan, including Amrit Udyan.
