Guwahati, 11th June: Union Minister C.R. Patil on Thursday claimed that the growing number of resignations from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) reflects increasing public dissatisfaction with the Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal, asserting that many party leaders are distancing themselves from the ruling outfit due to fears about its political future.
Addressing reporters during the BJP’s Pragati Path Yatra at the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge in Assam, Patil said the exodus of Trinamool leaders and legislators points to a deepening crisis within the party.
He alleged that politicians who once portrayed Mamata Banerjee as politically invincible are now abandoning the TMC because they sense a decline in public support and growing anger over governance-related issues.
According to Patil, several leaders fear that continued association with the Trinamool Congress could adversely affect their own political careers.
Expanding his attack, the Union Minister also targeted opposition parties across the country, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Referring to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, Patil claimed that parties which once projected themselves as alternatives to Prime Minister Narendra Modi are now grappling with internal divisions, defections and shrinking political influence.
He suggested that if the current trend continues, several opposition parties may face questions regarding their future relevance and existence.
Patil’s remarks came during the BJP’s nationwide outreach campaign, the Pragati Path Yatra, organised to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi completing 12 consecutive years in office.
The event was attended by Central Guwahati MLA Vijay Kumar Gupta, Assam Cabinet Minister Krishnendu Paul and senior BJP leaders.
Highlighting the Modi government’s achievements, Patil cited major infrastructure and connectivity projects undertaken over the past decade. He said improved road and bridge networks have significantly reduced travel time and enhanced connectivity across the country.
The Union Minister also pointed to the expansion of India’s aviation sector, noting that the number of airports has increased substantially since 2014. He described Vande Bharat trains as symbols of India’s rapidly modernising transportation infrastructure.
On the economic front, Patil said India has emerged as a leading exporter of Ayurvedic products, attributing the growth to rising global confidence in traditional Indian healthcare systems.
Referring to India’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said the country demonstrated its capabilities by developing vaccines and supplying them to more than 100 countries while simultaneously protecting its own population.
Patil further highlighted welfare initiatives, particularly sanitation programmes, stating that the construction of nearly 12 crore toilets has brought transformative social change and improved the lives of millions of citizens, especially women in rural areas.
The BJP’s Pragati Path Yatra is part of a broader campaign aimed at showcasing the achievements of the Modi government and strengthening public engagement ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
