Amritsar, 20th June: In a major crackdown on cross-border arms smuggling, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police arrested a man and recovered 26 sophisticated firearms, including an AK-47 rifle, near the India-Pakistan International Border in Amritsar.
The accused, identified as Rohan Khosla, a resident of Roopnagar Colony in Amritsar, was apprehended during a joint operation conducted by BSF Punjab and the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC), Amritsar.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that Khosla was working under the directions of an Australia-based associate, who shared the location of the drone-dropped weapons consignment through social media applications.
The recovered cache included one AK-47 rifle, 25 sophisticated pistols, 368 live cartridges, 48 magazines and a US-made bullet-proof vest. A Hyundai i20 car allegedly used for transporting the weapons was also seized.
Additional IG SSOC Amritsar Sukhminder Singh Mann said the operation was launched following intelligence from the BSF regarding a drone-dropped arms consignment near Border Outpost Shahpur.
An FIR has been registered under the Arms Act, relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam at SSOC Police Station, Amritsar.
Police said further investigations are underway to trace the entire cross-border arms trafficking network, identify all associates and dismantle the terror links behind the smuggling operation.
