Lucknow, 22nd June: At least 14 students lost their lives and four others were injured after a massive fire broke out at a coaching centre in the Aliganj area of Lucknow on Monday, triggering panic and a large-scale rescue operation.

The fire, which raged for over an hour, engulfed a building housing the coaching centre along with several commercial establishments. With flames spreading rapidly, several trapped students jumped from the first floor to save their lives, with some sustaining serious injuries.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who visited the spot, said that a high-level inquiry has been ordered and strict action will be taken against those found responsible. He confirmed that the rescue operation had been completed and no one remained trapped inside the building.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed grief over the tragedy, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also conveyed condolences, directed officials to provide all possible assistance to the affected families, and rushed to Lucknow after cancelling his scheduled programmes.
