New Delhi, 26th June: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India’s premier internal intelligence agency.

A 1993-batch IPS officer of the Telangana cadre, Dixit is currently serving as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau. He will succeed Tapan Kumar Deka, whose tenure as IB Director ends on June 30.

According to an order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Dixit has been granted an extension in service and will hold the post for a period of two years from the date he assumes charge or until further orders.

A qualified medical doctor who later joined the Indian Police Service, Dixit has handled several critical assignments in counter-terrorism, intelligence operations and national security during his career.

Before becoming the agency’s second-in-command as Special Director, he headed the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Jammu and Kashmir, where he played a key role in intelligence assessment and security planning during the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. He also oversaw intelligence arrangements during the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting held in Srinagar in 2023.

His appointment comes as the Intelligence Bureau continues to strengthen its focus on internal security, counter-terrorism and intelligence coordination across the country.
