Chennai, 30th June: The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) is set to formally end its alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), with party president Thol Thirumavalavan expected to announce the decision later on Tuesday, according to sources.

The development marks another major political realignment in Tamil Nadu following the Assembly elections, in which Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single-largest party and formed the government with the support of several former DMK allies.

The VCK, along with the Congress, Left parties and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), extended support to the TVK after the elections, helping Vijay secure a majority in the 234-member Assembly. The VCK’s support was instrumental in enabling the TVK-led coalition to cross the majority mark.

Sources said that after formally announcing its exit from the DMK-led alliance, the VCK is expected to participate in a meeting convened by the TVK to further consolidate ties among its allies.

The latest development follows the recent exit of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) from the DMK-led alliance. Last week, MDMK chief Vaiko ended his party’s nine-year association with the DMK, alleging attempts to weaken his party and citing differences over political developments following the Assembly elections.

However, the MDMK’s move has been complicated by the decision of its two MLAs, elected with DMK support, to remain with the DMK, meaning the party’s shift is unlikely to immediately alter the ruling coalition’s strength in the Assembly.

The VCK’s expected departure further weakens the DMK’s opposition bloc and signals continued consolidation of support around the TVK-led government in Tamil Nadu.
