General Upendra Dwivedi Retires After Four Decades of Service

Outgoing Army Chief leaves behind legacy of military transformation, operational readiness and joint force integration

New Delhi, 30th June: General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday relinquished the appointment of the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) upon superannuation, bringing to a close a distinguished military career spanning more than four decades.

During his tenure as Army Chief, General Dwivedi focused on maintaining a high level of operational preparedness, accelerating military transformation, enhancing jointness among the armed forces, strengthening technology integration and advancing soldier-centric reforms.

The Indian Army maintained a robust operational posture along the northern borders under Operation Snow Leopard, while continuing its responsibilities on the western front with professionalism and vigilance. The Army also successfully executed Operation Sindoor, which the government described as a reflection of the force’s preparedness, precision and calibrated response to evolving security challenges.

General Dwivedi also led the Army’s ongoing Decade of Transformation, driving reforms in force restructuring, modernisation, technology adoption, systems management and human resource development. Major initiatives progressed during his tenure included Rudra Brigades, Bhairav Battalions, Ashni Drone Platoons, Shaktibaan Regiments, Divyastra Batteries, Electronic Warfare Brigades and Integrated Battle Groups.

He consistently advocated greater synergy among the Army, Navy and Air Force, promoting integrated operational planning and theatre-oriented military structures to meet future security requirements.

The outgoing Army Chief also placed significant emphasis on the welfare of serving personnel, veterans, Veer Naris and military families. He introduced and strengthened initiatives aimed at recognising veterans’ contributions, including the Veterans Achievers Award, while reiterating the Army’s commitment to personnel beyond active service.

General Dwivedi further guided the formulation of the Strategic Security Guidelines @2047, aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 and the Armed Forces Vision @2047, to prepare the Army for future security challenges.

For his distinguished service, General Upendra Dwivedi has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM).

His retirement marks the end of a tenure characterised by operational readiness, institutional reforms and efforts to build a technologically advanced and future-ready Indian Army.
