63 Guwahati Green Bus Drivers Lose Licences

Assam Tightens Traffic Rules After Series of Accidents Involving City Buses

Guwahati, 8th July: The Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration has cancelled the driving licences of 63 green bus drivers for repeated traffic violations and announced stricter operating rules to improve road safety in Guwahati.

Under the new directives, all green buses must remain in the left lane while operating on city roads. Any bus found violating traffic regulations will be taken off the road for seven days as a penalty, officials said.

The crackdown comes after a series of accidents involving green buses, including a recent incident in Fancy Bazar where a scooter rider was injured after a bus allegedly entered the wrong lane and collided with the two-wheeler. Authorities have also received several complaints of rash driving by green bus operators in recent months.

The Assam government had introduced 371 eco-friendly buses in Guwahati, including 271 electric buses and 100 CNG buses, to promote sustainable public transport. However, recent accidents have raised concerns over road safety and compliance with traffic norms.

Officials said the latest measures are aimed at improving passenger safety, ensuring stricter enforcement of traffic rules and restoring public confidence in the city’s public transport system. They added that action against erring drivers and buses will continue.
