New Delhi, 11th July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep grief over the tragic Vietnam boat accident involving Indian nationals near Phu Quoc Island, extending condolences to the bereaved families and assuring all possible assistance through Indian diplomatic missions.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he was “extremely saddened” by the tragedy and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
“Extremely saddened to learn about the tragic news of a boat accident involving Indian nationals near Phu Quoc, Vietnam. My sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. My prayers for the early recovery of the injured survivors,” Modi said.
He added that the Indian Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate were providing all possible assistance and that Indian officials were in close contact with the Vietnamese authorities.
The accident occurred near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, off Vietnam’s popular tourist destination of Phu Quoc, when a speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members capsized in rough sea conditions while returning from an island excursion. According to Vietnamese authorities, 15 Indian tourists lost their lives, while 21 people were rescued, some of whom sustained injuries. Search and rescue operations have been completed, and authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
The Embassy of India in Vietnam has established emergency response mechanisms to assist the affected families and is coordinating closely with local authorities regarding medical care, documentation and repatriation arrangements.
