New Delhi, 21st July: Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan on Monday announced the introduction of AI-based live simultaneous interpretation in nine languages as the Upper House commenced its 271st Session, calling on members to ensure constructive debates and maintain parliamentary decorum.

Welcoming newly elected members and the House at the start of the session, Radhakrishnan said the Rajya Sabha has a proud tradition of meaningful deliberations and expressed confidence that the current session would uphold that legacy.

He informed members that the Rajya Sabha Secretariat has introduced live AI-powered simultaneous interpretation through multimedia devices installed at members’ seats. The facility currently supports nine languages and will be expanded in phases to cover all 22 scheduled languages. Members were requested to provide feedback to further improve the system.

Highlighting the legislative agenda, the Chairman said the House has 19 sittings scheduled during the session and urged members to utilise the available time effectively to deliberate and decide on issues of national importance.

Appealing for smooth functioning of the House, Radhakrishnan stressed that while differences of opinion are a vital part of parliamentary democracy, they should be expressed in a manner that preserves the dignity and sanctity of Parliament.

He also cautioned that disruptions delay discussion on matters affecting the nation and urged members across party lines to uphold discipline, decorum and the highest parliamentary traditions throughout the session.
