Sambhal, 22nd Aug: Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against fugitive gangster Shariq Sata, who has been identified by Uttar Pradesh Police as the alleged mastermind behind the violence in Sambhal on November 24, 2024.
Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi said Sata had earlier been declared a fugitive offender by a court, with proceedings initiated for attachment of his property.
According to the police, Sata fled to Dubai using a forged passport and has remained absconding. After completing the required legal formalities, the Uttar Pradesh Police approached the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to initiate the process for an Interpol notice.
Police maintained surveillance on Sata’s activities and submitted a detailed dossier to the CBI. The request was subsequently coordinated with Interpol, resulting in the issuance of the Red Corner Notice.
Bishnoi said authorities would now pursue efforts to locate, arrest and extradite Sata from whichever country he is found in. He is wanted in connection with the 2024 Sambhal violence as well as approximately 55 to 60 other criminal cases, according to police.
Violence broke out in Sambhal on November 24, 2024, when protesters clashed with security forces during a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid following claims that a temple had previously existed at the site. Four people were killed and several others injured in the violence.
During the investigation, Sata emerged as a prime accused in the case, police said. Multiple raids were conducted to locate him, but he could not be traced. Subsequently, a notice under Section 84 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was pasted at his residence, while a lookout circular had already been issued against him.
A Red Corner Notice is an international request circulated through Interpol to locate and provisionally arrest a person wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence, subject to the laws of the country where the individual is located.
Police said Sata has allegedly been involved in organised criminal activities, including vehicle thefts, across Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region, while operating from abroad.
