New Delhi, 4th Sept: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah inaugurated the Archery Association of India’s World Archery Para Series through video conferencing on Friday.
Addressing the event, Shah said the competition, being held from September 5 to 9, would be a memorable occasion for athletes and Ahmedabad. He said Ahmedabad, Gujarat and India would emerge as major hubs of the global sporting world in the coming years.
A total of 108 athletes from 19 countries are participating in the competition, including athletes from Bhutan, the United Kingdom, China, Bangladesh, France, Germany, Indonesia and the United States. Shah extended his best wishes to all participating athletes and invoked the Indian ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, saying the world is one family.
Shah said the state-of-the-art coaching and training facilities at the sports centre were being developed according to international standards. He said the centre would serve as a major training hub for athletes from India as well as sportspersons from across the world.
He said India’s sporting vision extends beyond winning medals to strengthening all sports featured in the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Police Games and other competitions. He also said India and Gujarat could emerge as global hubs for sports injury care, sports engineering and sports medical science.
Referring to Ahmedabad’s sporting calendar, Shah said the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which will mark their centenary edition, will be hosted by Ahmedabad. He added that Ahmedabad has also submitted its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games and expressed confidence that the Olympics would be held in the city.
Shah noted that Gujarat hosted around 10 international sporting events during 2025 and 2026, providing athletes opportunities to experience Ahmedabad, Gujarat and India.
Highlighting the importance of determination, Shah said champions are not made merely through sports, practice or coaching, but through an athlete’s passion, dedication, desire to win and consistent hard work. He also mentioned Indian para-athletes including Harvinder Singh, Sheetal Devi, Rakesh Kumar, Shyam Sundar Sami and Payal Nag for bringing laurels to the country.
